Candace Girls is an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing girls in post-war Liberia with quality educational opportunities.
Candace Girls was founded in 2008 by Candace Jackson and Jacob Chetegbee Debee, II, both of whom have a sincere and serious commitment toward helping to improve the lives of many brilliant and ambitious Liberian girls who have suffered from disparities in education due to post-war conditions.
The Liberian civil war, lasting from 1989 to 2003, has been classified as the most brutal of civil wars to have surfaced in the history of West Africa. The war claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians and displaced a million others into refugee camps in neighboring countries. The war left behind debilitating effects for those fortunate to have survived. Eighty-six percent of Liberia's work force became unemployed; thousands of families were torn apart, leaving orphans with little or no support; and the educational system and schools were severely damaged. Girls were distinctively and disproportionately affected, having been abused physically and mentally in unimaginable ways.
Yet, today, Liberian girls are conquering their past and looking forward. They are partnering with Candace Girls to help create in them a better future, one that far surpasses their history.
Candace Girls views education, especially for girls, as one of the many ways to help rebuild Liberia. In doing so, Candace Girls is providing scholarships for its students to go to school from Kindergarten/pre-primary to College and Post-graduate school. The majority of our students are placed in private and church mission schools, which offer a high quality of education. Some of our college students attend the public universities which offer the same. In addition, our students are engaging in vocational training consistent with their career interests.
Candace Girls is dedicated to ensuring that our students go to school, advance each year, graduate from college, achieve higher education, and go on to fulfill meaningful careers, understanding they can be anything they want to be and that they have much to offer the world.
Candace Girls maintains a Certificate of Accreditation from the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs of the Republic of Liberia.
Candace Girls is incorporated in South Carolina and is a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
